The Lady and the Rockstar…

“A Southern girl who got something to say, and spaces to create - who am I, but a storyteller first, and a rocker always?”

Astin Rocks. is a multi-hyphenate filmmaker, a critical cinephile, and an indelible chanteuse... who actually rocks. She started acting and modeling at the age of 15, and after appearing in TBS’ “Movie and a Makeover” in 2006, the Atlanta native knew there was no other profession for her other than a career in film. She soon decided to attend Temple University in Philadelphia, and in 2012, she earned a BFA in Film & Media Arts.

Upon leaving the city of Brotherly Love, Astin flew west to Beijing, China, and embarked on a career in video production. After a year, she moved back stateside and landed in Jackson, MS, where she founded a community arts organization, “Inspire Jackson,” which aims to connect high school students with careers in the arts. After leading the organization, she returned to her hometown and began working in both the casting and wardrobe departments on Strange Weather and Don’t Kill It.

Today, Astin serves as the Narrative Shorts Programmer at the Atlanta Film Festival, where she also moderates film panels like SING SING, AJC Presents: The South Got Something to Say, and An Angry Black Girl & Her Monster.

When she isn’t moderating or viewing submissions, Astin is writing, producing and starring in her own projects. She also fronts her rock band, Thee BLK Pearl, as the lead singer. Notable productions include her musical film Love Soliloquy, irreverent workplace comedy series Real Fakes, and pop culture music and film podcast “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.”
